In the land of cellar lanes
The cellar lanes are typical for the Weinviertel region. Usually these cellar lanes are narrow passes, in which the local winegrowers keep their wine cellars and press houses. The Weinviertel region counts more than 1,000 cellar lanes.
Some of them have the size of small villages, others only consist of single press houses. ‘Villages without chimneys’, as the saying goes. In former times the press houses were used as storage location of the fruits and as production area of wine, but nowadays most of their gates are only open for special events – presentations , cellar lane festivals and wine tastings.
Cellar lanes of Mailberg
Three cellar lanes shape the general appearance of Mailberg. The cellar lane ‘Zipf’ consists of an upper and a lower cellar lane. The upper cellar lane is under a preservation order because of its original buildings.
It holds about 21 wine cellars and is one of the most beautiful cellar lanes of Lower Austria.
There are altogether 200 wine cellars in Mailberg – all of them well-restored local jewels.
